HISB 422 Prison, Medicine, and Madness in Africa (3)

Staff. This seminar will consider various African societies' techniques for dealing with individual and collective experiences of dealing with hurt, distress, and aberrance. We will go on to examine how these have been altered by colonialism and European institutions like the prison, psychiatry, and allopathic medicine. Emphasis will be place on the work of the philosopher Michel Foucault and how his theories might apply to Africa.
