HISU 649 Sexuality and the Advent of Modern American Culture (3)

Prof. Devlin. An exploration of the different ways in which sexuality and culture have intersected in the United States over the course of the modern period. Topics include perspectives on prostitution with special attention to the "vice crusaders" of the late nineteenth century; the politics of homosexuality; the effects of mass culture and consumer values on the popular meaning of sexuality; the "sexual revolution" of the nineteen seventies; the rise of the romance novel and its relationship to gender; and the question of the role of sexuality in identity formation at the end of the century.
