ANTH 315 Cognitive Anthropology (3)

Prof. Balee. Cross-cultural investigation of human thinking and rationality. Assesses linguistic relativity; cognitive rationalism; comparative aspects of human classification and nomenclature of diverse semantic fields; the use of linguistic and cultural universals in attempts to define the nature of human thought processes; possible relationships among sociocultural evolution and the size and structure of given vocabularies in unrelated languages; and the problem of irrationality.
