Course:

ARHS 661 Visuality, Representation and the Body (3)

Prof. Plante. Examines the ways in which artists-painters, sculptors, film makers, performance artists-from the 19th- and 20th-century have constructed and organized representations of the human body. Dependent upon the writings of Lacan and other post-Freudian theorists, the body will be examined as a site across which history, memory and cultural politics have been played out. Artists studied will include Cassatt, Duchamp, Eakins, Madonna, Mapplethorpe, O'Keefe, Lorna Simpson, and Kiki Smith.
